Farmall H tractor is a 2-plow row crop, medium-sized tractor manufactured by International Harvester. The production years spanned from 1939 to 1954. For more than 14 years, with over 390,000 units produced, it was the most successful model from the “letter series” of International Harvester.
The H was a follow-up of Farmall-20. It was gradually upgraded with the more advanced model numbers, such as Farmall 300, 350, and Super H, but always essentially remained as the same power equipment. The original versions of this model used a C152 four-cylinder in-line engine. The manufacturing for all H versions wrapped up in 1963.
Farmall H tractor was designed by Raymond Loewy. As mentioned, it comes with a four-cylinder in-line engine, 6V positive ground electrical system, and 2,490 cm3 (15 in3) displacement. There are six total transmission gears, comprising of 5F and 1R.
The early models used distillate and kerosene, began with gasoline, and then changed into regular fuels after warming up. It was not until 1940 that the gasoline-based engine was added into the lineup. The tractor can reach up to 27 km/h (17 mph). Units sold with steel wheels didn’t include fifth gear, even though this option was available since the initial models.
Farmall H tractor front wheels were the tightly closed nose wheels. There were versions with wide front acle or single wheel. The width of rear wheels was adjustable, from 110 cm (44 inches) to 200 cm (80 inches) to accommodate the different widths of crop rows. The extended axle option was also available, with an alternative of 250 cm (100 inches).
Alongside Farmall M and its versions, Farmall H tractor was the smaller one between two primary row crop tractors manufactured by the company from late 30s to the early 50s. However, the same implements were still suitable. Compared to the other models in the International Harvester’s “letter series”, the H had more of a modular design – allowing replacement and disassembles of parts. All of the units under this lineup used hydraulic lifts.
