John Deere 316 garden tractor was a part of the company’s 300 series. It is a two-wheel drive (2WD) unit that was manufactured from 1984 to 1992 in Wisconsin, United States. The early version of the 316 used Onan B43E engine, while the later version used Onan P218G engine.
John Deere 316 garden tractor was a subsided version of the highly popular the 318 tractors, it was even marketed as the ‘lighter’ or ‘smaller’ version of it. Both were equipped with similar engine, but the 316 didn’t have power steering feature and only had 1 hydraulics spool. The early productions came with 16 horsepower output, but later they were upgraded to 18 horsepower output, which was a match with the John Deere 318.

This engine yields 16 horsepower (11.9 kW or 16.2 PS) of output power @ 3600, and the compression ratio is rated at 6.2:1.
Meanwhile, the Onan P218G engine was used on the later version. It is a 0.8 L (47.7 cubic inch or 782 cm2) 2-cylinder engine that has cylinder bore of 3.25 inches (82.55 mm) and piston stroke of 2.87 inches (73 mm). This engine generates 18 horsepower (13.4 kW or 18.2 PS) of output power @ 3600, and the compression ratio is rated at 7.0:1. Both have fuel tank capacity of 4.5 gallons (17 liters or 3.7 imperial gallons), manual steering, and OOS platform.
There are several attachment types suitable for the John Deere 316 garden tractor. First is the 38 inches (960 mm) mid-mounted mower deck with two blades and hydraulic lift.
